Governor Tim Walz announced the reappointment of the Honorable Edward Cleary as Chief Judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Chief Judge Cleary will continue to serve as the Chief Judge until his retirement on April 30, 2020, which he announced earlier today.

I recently fielded a question from a trial court judge asking if it was ethical to engage in private practice in Minnesota without malpractice insurance. The answer: yes. The questioner was a bit incredulous at the answer—as I admit I was before taking this job. I always assumed that everyone in private practice carried malpractice insurance. Sure, government lawyers probably did not, and I could see where in-house counsel did not need insurance, but of course everyone else was required to carry insurance, right? Nope.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. So, at a minimum, let’s be aware. Knowledge, after all, is said to be power. Let’s also beware of believing that awareness is enough. It’s not. We should support those who take action against this plague; and we should find avenues for action. Not just for a single month, but as part of our ongoing consciousness.

Gov. Tim Walz announced the appointment of Jade Rosenfeldt as District Court Judge in Minnesota’s 7th Judicial District. This appointment fills a vacancy that occurred upon the creation of a new District Court judgeship effective July 1, 2019 and will be chambered in Moorhead in Clay County.

Panel recommends Minnesota Court of Appeals candidates

Earlier this year, Governor Walz asked a panel consisting of leadership in the Governor’s Office, the Chair of the Commission on Judicial Selection, and the at-large members of that Commission, to solicit applicants, review candidates, and recommend finalists for appointment to the Court of Appeals. The panel announced today that it is recommending five candidates for consideration to fill the current vacancies on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
