Justice System (2.0 EOB CLE Credits)
The presentation focuses on the handling of sexual assault and harassment
within the military justice system. In recent years, the military justice
system has been criticized for not properly handling sexual assault and
harassment cases. It has also been criticized for bias against sexual
assault and harassment victims in the military justice system, investigatory
process and command channels. The presentation will examine recent reforms
to the military justice system and investigatory process to address sexual
assaults and harassment.
This program will provide a unique opportunity to hear from the perspective
of Major General (retired) Robert Shadley who served as the Commanding General
at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. He is the author of the book, “The GAMe:
Unraveling a Military Sex Scandal,” discussing his experiences helping victims
and holding offenders accountable. In retirement, he continues to advocate
for sexual assault victims and consults with military organizations on the
elimination of sexual assault.
Finally, the presentation provides attendees an opportunity to discuss the
effectiveness of current reforms, whether additional reforms are needed or
whether current reforms have unfairly affected the due process rights of the
accused.
