So You Want to be a Judge? Spotlight: Hon. Rachna B. Sullivan

Judge Sullivan Banner 800

For this series, we asked Hennepin County judges about why they wanted to become judges and their advice for attorneys who want to pursue a path to the bench.

The Hon. Rachna B. Sullivan was appointed to the Fourth Judicial District Bench in August of 2019. Prior to becoming a judge, she was a shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron, where she practiced in commercial litigation cases. She serves on the board of the Infinity Project – Minnesota Chapter.

Judge-Rachna-Sullivan-300What motivated you to start the application process to become a judge?

I wanted to return to public service and serve as a judge to give back to the people of Minnesota. I arrived in this country at the age of 17 for a better education and with a belief that this is a country that welcomes those from the outside who are willing to contribute to this nation. When I left India, I made a promise to my family that I would always remember to give back more than I have received. Today, I stand on the shoulders of so many mentors, friends, and especially my family who believed in me and gave me this opportunity to succeed. I see my service to Minnesota as a small repayment of this enormous debt.

"I stand on the shoulders of so many mentors, friends, and especially my family who believed in me and gave me this opportunity to succeed."

What was one thing that surprised you about the application and onboarding process?

How much work it is and the emotional toll it takes to go through the process.

What’s one piece of advice you would have for someone who wants to become a judge?

Keep trying and don’t give up.   As successful lawyers know, rejection is hard.   However, many judges— including me—have been rejected. It is part of the process.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before you started the process?

All the resources that are available and the people who are available to help with the process.

Is there anything else you wanted to mention about the process?

I am so grateful to my two law firms: Rider Bennett and Fredrikson & Byron that provided me excellent opportunities and training, the friendship of so many good friends who were and are with me every step of the way, and most importantly, my family that stood by me.
