Governor Walz Appoints Julia Dayton Klein to Fill Fourth Judicial District Vacancy

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan today announced the appointment of Julia Dayton Klein as District Court Judge in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. Ms. Dayton Klein will be replacing the Honorable Thomas S. Fraser and will be chambered in Minneapolis in Hennepin County.

“I am honored to appoint Ms. Dayton Klein to the Fourth Judicial District,” said Governor Walz. “Ms. Dayton Klein has a wealth of public and private legal experience and is a proven leader. I look forward to her contributions to the cause of justice on and off the bench.”

“Ms. Dayton Klein will make an excellent addition to the Hennepin County bench,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “She is compassionate, thoughtful, and dedicated to giving back to our community.”

Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District encompasses Hennepin County.


About Julia Dayton Klein

Ms. Dayton Klein is a partner and trial lawyer at Lathrop GPM, where she represents clients in matters involving asylum, election and voting rights, employment, food safety and labeling, government investigations, housing, intellectual property, international arbitration, products liability, and regulatory issues. She also serves as the co-lead of Lathrop GPM’s Women’s Initiative Network and on its Culture, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Previously, Ms. Dayton Klein served as General Counsel for the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and as an associate at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi and Moss & Barnett. She also served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Charles A. Porter, Jr. Her pro-bono activities include volunteering with The Advocates for Human Rights, the Volunteer Lawyers Network, and various voting rights organizations in voter protection efforts. Ms. Dayton Klein’s community involvement includes serving on the Board of the Friends of the Hennepin County Library, serving as a parent volunteer at Kenwood Elementary School, and volunteering at the North Community Herald Mezlie YMCA, assisting children with distance learning. She previously served on the Board of Women Winning.

Ms. Dayton Klein earned her B.A., cum laude, in Finance and Business Economics with a concentration in the Hesburgh Program of Public Service from the University of Notre Dame, and J.D., cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame Law School.
