Free legal research tool

by Joe Kaczrowski | Apr 06, 2015

Every month, MSBA members view almost 30,000 documents on Fastcase.

With Fastcase, you can find answers to your legal research questions. Libraries include primary law from all 50 states, as well as complete coverage of federal court decisions. Fastcase also includes statutes, regulations, court rules, and constitutions.  And Fastcase access is provided free to MSBA members.

Last fall, Bench & Bar published an article comparing the free and reduced-cost legal research options in Minnesota, including Fastcase.  Looking at different factors, including content, reliability, clarity/accuracy, and cost, the author concluded that "[b]oth Fastcase and Google Scholar provide exciting opportunities to lawyers who are looking for free or reduced-cost tools" and "[i]n many ways, Fastcase is a better tool than Google Scholar for practicing lawyers because of its expansive content, speedy updating, and reliable indexing."

Not sure if Fastcase is right for you? Or how to get started?  Fastcase offers MSBA members several other benefits as well, including free webcast CLEs each month and helpful articles and how-to guides.
