Representing Student Athletes and Athletic Organizations: A Panel Discussion on Ethical Issues Impacting Amateur Sports

Event Description

Join the MSBA and the Sports Art & Entertainment Law Section for a panel discussion on current legal and ethical issues involved in representing amateur athletes and athletic organizations with a range of panelists. Panelists will discuss a range of topics, including the current status of athlete compensation and Name Image Likeness (NIL) issues, including recruiting, NIL collectives, and “pay-for-play” concerns; representation of minor athletes and working with parents and guardians; actual and implied conflicts of interest when representing athletes and athletic organizations; unionization, health and safety, codes of conduct, and employment status; and the business of sports.

 

Panelists:

Natolie Hochhausen | Ms. Hochhausen is a shareholder at Fafinski Mark & Johnson P.A. where she practices in the firm’s HR and Employment practice group. Natolie represents businesses and individuals, including sports organizations, in a wide range of employment law matters, including accommodations, benefits, contracts, equity incentive plans, wage and hour matters, privacy, and compliance.

Aaron Sampsel | Mr. Sampsel is an attorney with Christensen Law Office PLLC and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Aaron previously worked at the Minnesota Office of Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility, and his practice focuses on the representation of other attorneys on matters of ethics and professional responsibility.

Professor David Grenardo | Professor Grenardo is a professor of law and associate director of the Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where he teaches Professional Responsibility and Sports Law courses. Professor Grenardo regularly presents on issues involving the intersection of sports, entertainment, business, ethics, and the law and has had articles and op-eds published in a variety of legal journals, national publications, and major newspapers.

Nate Snyder | Mr. Snyder is Sports and Entertainment attorney at Fafinski Mark & Johnson P.A. and Chair of the MSBA Sports Art & Entertainment Section. Nate’s practice includes serving as outside counsel to professional, collegiate, and amateur sports organizations, athletes, and agents, including advising on NIL and intellectual property matters, as well as commercial transactions.
