Program Description:
“In the final analysis, a riot is the
language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to
hear?” Martin Luther King, Jr.
The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis
on May 25, 2020, by Minneapolis police, unleashed grief, despair, anger, and
fury. What is it that we have failed to hear? Studies and statistics
confirm that Black people experience more violent treatment at the hands of
police. And while we live in a beautiful and prosperous state, Black
people are disproportionately excluded from that prosperity due to laws that
have marginalized the Black community and excluded the Black community from
creating wealth or power in Minnesota.
This discussion will have three parts. 1.
Education. We will discuss a few of the historic ways the imposition of laws in
Minnesota have resulted in the creation of systemic racism in this State and the
impact on Black participation in the legal community. 2. Recognition. The group
will take a close look at the lack of diversity in our own practice area -
Social Security. 3. Action. We will discuss ways that we can support Black
attorneys and the Black community today and in the long-term with the hope of
creating action items for the section as a whole.
