This annual CLE focuses on current and emerging issues related to long-term care, particularly in assisted living and nursing home settings. This year’s presenters focus on proposed legislation, recent litigation, elder abuse prevention, housing options, and eliminating ageism and other forms of bias in legal practice.

Lisa Thimjon, Esq. (Legislative Liaison, Minnesota Department of Health) will provide an update on current legislative efforts to establish an assisted living license, improve consumer protections, allow electronic monitoring, and otherwise combat elder abuse.

Joel Smith, Esq. (Attorney, Kosieradzki Smith Law Firm) will discuss recent litigation yielding a favorable jury verdict for a nursing home resident.

Laura Orr, Esq. (Attorney, Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services) will provide an overview of the legal distinctions among forms of affordable housing.

Sara Michel, LGSW (Care Manager, Volunteers of America – Minnesota) will identify specialty care settings for people with challenging health needs.

Marit Peterson, JD (Program Director, Minnesota Elder Justice Center) will identify resources available to attorneys who encounter survivors of maltreatment.

Together, Ms. Orr, Ms. Michel, and Ms. Peterson will discuss how attorneys may work to identify and eliminate forms of age, disability, and economic bias in how they respond to particular issues in long-term care.
