Chestnut Cambronne’s practice areas, in alphabetical order, are arbitration and mediation; brewery, distillery and cannabis law; business representation; civil litigation; class action litigation; construction litigation; criminal defense; elder law; employment law; estate planning; family law; government representation; homeowner association law; intellectual property; insurance litigation; maritime and admiralty law; personal injury; professional liability; real estate law; real estate litigation; trust and estate litigation; and white collar defense. The largest practices areas are estate and elder law planning, civil litigation, family law, and class action litigation.
Training Provided to Associates
The firm assigns the HCBA law clerk with a mentor, and law clerks also work closely with other attorneys in the firm who will provide guidance and feedback. Law clerks will work in multiple areas of law to gain exposure to different practice areas. Law clerks receive projects in cases that can range from research, memorandum drafting (office and advocacy), discovery work, motion practice, etc. Chestnut Cambronne hopes to provide challenging work that would give the law clerk the experience of what a first-year associate might be like, all with mentoring and close supervision.
Pro Bono/Community Involvement
Chestnut Cambronne’s attorneys individually commit to pro bono projects, including work with veterans. The firm also has is involved with the Innocence Project. The firm first participated in the HCBA Diversity Clerkship program seven year ago. In addition, many of the firm’s attorneys are active members of nonprofit, community, and faith organizations. Many of its attorneys also serve in leadership roles in these organizations throughout the Twin Cities.
Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Chestnut Cambronne continues to expand its commitment to diversity by participating in this HCBA program and believes its attorneys and staff should reflect the firm’s clients and community in general. Of the firm’s twelve female attorneys, four are partners and two are shareholders, and two are African American. Two of the firm’s male partners, including the managing partner, are gay. The firm also has staff from the Asian, African American, Latin American, Native American, and LGBTQ communities. The firm believes the future calls for expanded representation of diverse communities. The firm also has a strong connection with the Vietnamese community in the Twin Cities.
Summer Associate/Clerkship Description
Law clerks can expect to receive a variety of research and writing projects from attorneys in nearly all the firm’s practice areas. These projects may range from providing legal and factual analysis in an office memorandum to drafting actual drafts of pleadings in litigation under attorney supervision. Law clerks will be assigned a mentor, but other lawyers in the firm will also provide assignments, feedback, and support. Through the law clerk’s work, the firm is given the opportunity to assess the law clerk’s talents and abilities, as well as cultural fit.
Attorneys in the firm provide projects to and involve law clerks in their cases so law clerks are exposed to multiple aspects of the legal profession and practice areas. Assignments will initially be coordinated with the managing partner, but eventually assignments will come from the common pool of projects handled by the firm’s law clerks depending on availability and complexity.

Summer Clerkship Salary and Benefits
The HCBA clerk is paid $30 per hour. No other benefits are paid for hourly, part-time temporary employees.
If the law clerk successfully completes the 2024 summer clerkship through HCBA, the firm may offer continued clerkship opportunities for the following academic year and the next summer. This also may depend on firm needs. Like the rest of the firm’s attorneys and staff, law clerks work in-office.
