In the 2021-2022, the Minnesota Legislature enacted Minn.
Stat. § 257D.01 which expanded guardianship petitions in juvenile court to young
people ages 18 to 21. One important purpose of this legislation was to provide a
pathway for young people and families to obtain special findings to apply for
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) in immigration proceedings. The new
statute outlines a process by which the young person themself can petition the
juvenile court for a form of guardianship. The speakers will describe the
process and their initial experiences working with the new
statute.
