International Tax Polar Plunge: The Cold Reality of Inversions, FATCA, and Expatriations

Date: Thursday, March 19, 2015 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Venue: Presidents Room / Minnesota State Bar Association  Minneapolis, MN United States  Get Directions
Total Price: $20.00

Deadline to Register: March 16, 2015

A moderated panel of seasoned tax professionals will examine recent developments in the hot international tax topics of corporate inversions, FATCA and expatriations.  The U.S. federal income tax system taxes U.S. citizens and residents on their worldwide income.  The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) created a complex regime of reporting and withholding requirements, affecting not only U.S. taxpayers, but also “foreign financial institutions” (FFIs).  This CLE will generally discuss FATCA’s reporting and withholding requirements, the impact on US origin payments made to FFIs in the event of nonreporting/nonfiling, the effects of intergovernmental agreements (IGAs), etc.  The CLE will also cover the rules applicable under the United States system of taxation regarding high-profile corporate inversions (including the administration’s attempt to curb these transactions) and the record number of individual expatriations (including the tax consequences of renouncing U.S. citizenship or giving up a long-term green card).
