The 2022 RCBA Dinstinguished Humanitarian Service award and the Liberty Bell Award were given at the Member Appreciation Day on June 15.

The Ramsey County Bar Association presented two of its annual awards at its Member Appreciation Day on June 15. The Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award was presented to Kathy Eveslage of Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS), and the Liberty Bell Award was presented to the Sahan Journal news organization.

The Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award is given to an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the development of law in the community and commitment to humanitarian service to the bar and the community. This year’s recipient is Kathy Eveslage, a staff attorney at SMRLS. Eveslage, who has worked at SMRLS for over 30 years, has been a champion of protecting the rights of vulnerable communities throughout the state. She has become an expert in the rights of Medical Assistance recipients, particularly for non-English speaking seniors. She has also been pivotal in establishing the SMRLS hotline, which helped expand access to justice for clients.

The recipient of the Liberty Bell Award is an individual or organization who has been involved in activities that promote a better understanding of the law and our government. This year, the award was given to the Sahan Journal. Launched in 2019, the Sahan Journal is a news organization that is dedicated to reporting for immigrants and communities of color in Minnesota. They have provided vital civic information to communities that are often overlooked, such as voter guides for specific communities and critical coverage of important trials here in the Twin Cities.
