Recap of ENRE Law Student & New Lawyer Pizza Reception on October 18, 2011
Over fifty students and twenty-five lawyers attended this October 18th event, which provided Minnesota law students with an opportunity to connect with local environmental, natural resources and energy lawyers.  The section extends its thanks to Dorsey & Whitney for hosting the event and to section liaison Tamara Patton for coordinating it.  As noted at the event, the ENRE Section encourages students to join us as section members, attend our upcoming CLEs, and act as contributing writers for our website.  Please click here for more information.

The MSBA Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Section presented its annual Agency Update on November 8, 2011.  Leonard Street & Deinard hosted the event, at which top state agency officials provided their perspectives on current and upcoming environmental, natural resource and energy issues in Minnesota.  Over seventy attorneys attended to hear from Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Commissioner Paul Aasen, Department of Agriculture Commissioner David Frederickson, Department of Commerce Deputy Commissioner Bill Grant, Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Landwehr, and Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources Executive Director John Jaschke. On December 7, 2011, the MSBA Environmental, Natural Resources & Energy Section hosted a one-hour CLE program on the regulatory framework for mining in Minnesota. The goal of the program was to provide a broad overview of the regulatory and permitting process for proposed mining projects in Minnesota, a topic of particular interest to section members due to the increase in interest and project proposals for mining of nonferrous metals, such as copper and nickel, in northeastern Minnesota.  In an informative, rapid-fire session, attendees heard from Lori Stegink, Vice President of Barr Engineering, on technical issues in permitting and environmental review for mining projects, from Aaron Vande Linde, Transactions Manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, on the process for leasing of state-owned minerals, from Aleava Sayre, an attorney with Leonard Street & Deinard, on the federal mineral regulatory framework, from Peder Larson, an attorney with Larkin Hoffman, on the state regulatory framework, and from Paula Maccabee, an attorney with Just Change Law Offices, on legal aspects of the permitting and environmental review process for mining projects.  Electronic copies of presentation materials from this program are available at http://www.mnbar.org/sections/environmental/priorCLE.asp.
