Everything but the Kitchen Sink for Criminal Lawyers: Morning Session | How to Handle a Criminal Case
Afternoon Session | Criminal Appeals 101

Join the MSBA Criminal Law Section for its 2011 Annual Meeting and featured CLE program. Choose one or both sessions of this comprehensive CLE program. The morning session will include breakfast and three hours of intensive instruction from experienced lawyers about handling a criminal case from start to finish. Lunch and the Section's Annual Meeting will follow at noon. We'll wrap up the afternoon with a three hour session on criminal appeals, capped off by a networking reception.

The morning session will focus on the basics of handling a criminal law case from file to finish. Seasoned criminal lawyers - both prosecutors and defenders - will walk you through:

The "front end" of a criminal case - bail through pre-trial;
“What the heck is a Rasmussen hearing?”;
How to negotiate your case, plea strategies and getting good deals;
How to successfully navigate jury selection and set the expectations of juries; and
Tips for convincing and persuading juries.

The afternoon session will focus on criminal appeals. Criminal lawyers experienced in handling appeals will address the following:

Post conviction relief;
Court of Appeals and Minnesota Supreme Court filing deadlines;
Standards of review;
State v. Lothenbach pleas on stipulated facts; and
Best practices when arguing at the Appellate Courts.
