Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Law Section


Exchanges information and ideas among Minnesota lawyers active in environmental and natural resources practice, and educates members of the section with respect to environmental law issues.


The Section, either alone or in tandem with local or national bar associations, sponsors seminars and informational exchanges, and publishes a newsletter to keep its members abreast of developments in these fast-changing fields.

Attorneys Jeremy Greenhouse and Susan Wiens receive MSBA Wiblishauser Award

Jeremy Greenhouse and Susan Wiens have received the Wiblishauser Award for their Bench & Bar article, There’s Sand in Them Thar Hills: Minnesota Races to Regulate Frac Sand Mining.

The Wiblishauser Award is named after the late Elmer Wiblishauser, a long-time member of the Publications Committee and one-time Treasurer of the MSBA who championed establishment of an award to recognize outstanding contributions to Bench & Bar. 

Jeremy Greenhouse is a partner at The Environmental Law Group Ltd. in Minneapolis, having joined the firm in 2012 after prior experience in the Environmental, Energy & Natural Resources Group at Dorsey & Whitney and as founding partner of Greenhouse & Gram LLC.  A member of the Section Council for MSBA’s Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section , he writes a monthly “Environmental Law Update” for Bench and Bar and maintains an environmental law blog, Fire on the River. He is past editor of the Federal Bar Association’s Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources newsletter.

Susan Wiens has been of counsel with The Environmental Law Group, Ltd. since February 2014, having begun her environmental law career in 1989 in the Environmental Law Group at Oppenheimer Wolff and Donnelly.  She later transferred her environmental law practice to Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman, Ltd. and joined the Minneapolis law firm Greene Espel, PLLP, in 1996, where she became a partner in 1997. Susan switched gears in 2002 becoming Vice-President of Operations for a privately held company in the legal services sector, returning to law practice in 2008 when she opened her own firm.

2015 ENRE Clerkship

Michael Laird was the 2015 recipient of the ENRE sponsored clerkship grant.  He is entering his third year at the University of Minnesota School of Law.  The grant allowed Michael to work with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Office of General Counsel providing legal advice and support for the Agency relating to a wide variety of environmental issues.
