Building A Team From Scratch- Minnesota Aurora and Community-Owned Women’s Sports

Event Description

In an era of billionaire team owners and global investment funds, a small group of Minnesotans wanted to do something different and, in launching the first community owned women’s soccer team in the United States, raised $1 million from over 3,000 community owners nationwide and built a title-contending pre-professional women’s soccer team just 18 months. Seeking to ingrain a set of positive and inclusive values in a new model of community-owned sports, Minnesota Aurora’s co-founders have regularly pushed against conventional norms in sports and business and sought to identify new ways of doing things. This CLE will discuss the various corporate, intellectual property, employment, and franchise issues that Minnesota Aurora has had to navigate in its less than two years in existence and discuss how some of the "alternative approaches" the club has taken in its development have become some of its greatest strengths, both on and off the field

Speaker:

Matthew W. Bergeron is a shareholder and member of Larkin Hoffman’s government relations and health law groups. In his legislative practice, Matthew advises a variety of clients through the process of developing, drafting, and promoting their legislative agendas and supports their ongoing cultivation of relationships with legislators, agency staff and the governor’s office. Outside of the Capitol, Matthew’s legal practice centers on representing Medicaid providers, including community clinics, behavioral health, disability services providers, and long-term care facilities on issues related to licensing, reimbursement, and regulatory compliance. Matthew is also one of the nine co-founders and currently serves as general counsel of Minnesota Aurora, F.C., a pre-professional women’s soccer team competing in the USL’s W-League which raised $1 million from over 3,000 community owners via a Regulation C.F. offering.
