A Message from Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Gildea:

Talking Points:

With the state’s projected budget surplus, Minnesota has the opportunity to remedy critical budget deficits for the courts, public defenders and civil legal services.

Legislative spending targets for the courts, public defenders and civil legal services should be raised.

Some of the key reasons for increased funding are:

  • Address the challenges of rising caseloads by providing additional judges and staff
  • Improve cybersecurity for Minnesota courts and protect private data
  • Secure sustainable funding for drug, DWI and other treatment courts
  • Ensure a competitive salary structure to maintain a skilled judicial workforce
  • Provide quality interpreter services for court participants who are hard of hearing or have limited-English proficiency
  • Meet the costs of mandated psychological examinations
  • Close the gap between Minnesota public defender staffing and national standards
  • Provide attorneys to enable low-income Minnesotans to meet their basic needs
