Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse occurs in multiple forms, from physical abuse and neglect to financial exploitation.  Because they generally have some savings and other assets, seniors and other vulnerable adults make attractive targets for exploitative relatives and loved-ones, scammers, and unscrupulous businesses. Misunderstanding and unawareness of the issues, combined with the shame and confusion of victims, means most elder abuse and exploitation goes undetected and unreported. Advocates in Minnesota are recognizing the need for a collaborative approach to address the multiple iterations of financial exploitation.  There is a growing need for civil attorneys and other legal professionals to learn how to spot and respond to abuse and exploitation.  Members of the legal profession need to join law enforcement, adult protection and social workers, medical professionals, and financial professionals in helping to both prevent elder exploitation and help victims recover.

In this 1-hour presentation, a panel of Elder Law and Elder Abuse experts and attorneys will gather to talk about these issues.  They will explain and demonstrate the problem and offer ideas about how private practitioners and financial professionals can help address this growing social and legal issue.
