This program will cover the following topics:

1) The American with Disabilities Act-
• Individuals dealing with mental illness
• Barriers to attorney services that individuals with mental illness face

2) Effective Communication
• “People first” language
• Language that plays into stereotypes
• How to approach the topic of mental illness with your client (if necessary)

3) Understanding how a client’s mental illness diagnosis may affect their ability to communicate, take direction, and comprehend the way that you may be expecting them to.
• Understanding of how individuals may communicate when they are being affected by mental illness.
• How to change your communication to more effectively represent your client.

4) De-escalating techniques that help to preserve the attorney client relationship

5) Reasonable accommodations may be desired by your client to access your services more effectively.
• Tools that may help
• Meeting location and duration
• Utilization of support people
• Service animals

6) Obligations under the rules of professional conduct
• Capacity
• Diminished capacity
• Instances of immanent danger to your client or others
