Walz, Flanagan Thank Chair of Judicial Selection Commission and Announce Process to Fill Vacancy

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced that Lola Velazquez-Aguilu is stepping down as chair of the Commission on Judicial Selection to join the Attorney General’s office as a Special Assistant Attorney General.

“I want to thank Ms. Velazquez-Aguilu for her service on the Commission. Her service, commitment, and dedication will have a lasting impact on our state and the Commission,” said Governor Walz. “She has done great work engaging Minnesota’s many diverse communities and making the judicial selection process more transparent and accessible.”

“Under Ms. Velazquez-Aguilu’s leadership, the Commission has instituted important changes that are critical to the diversification of the judiciary,” said Lt. Governor Flanagan. “She has done an exceptional job, and we are certain she will bring the same level of excellence to her new role. I’m incredibly grateful for our work together.”

Ms. Velazquez-Aguilu’s departure creates a vacancy for one at-large member of the Commission. Per statute, the Governor appoints one of the at-large members to serve as chair. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are seeking applicants to fill the at-large and chair positions. Individuals wishing to apply to be an at-large member and/or chair of the commission must submit a cover letter addressed to the Governor and a resume via email to Judicial.Selection@state.mn.us. Individuals wishing to be considered for both positions may submit one cover letter and resume. Application materials are due by close of business on Friday, July 24, 2020.
