Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Second Judicial District Candidates to Governor Walz 

[ST. PAUL, MN] – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates for consideration to fill the current vacancy in Minnesota’s Second Judicial District. This vacancy occurred upon the appointment of the Honorable Jeffrey M. Bryan to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This position be chambered at St. Paul in Ramsey County.

David Brown: Mr. Brown is the Chief Deputy Hennepin County Attorney where he is responsible for overseeing the County Attorney’s four criminal divisions. He has led office initiatives on diversity and inclusion, drug reform, expungement expansion, and bail reform. Mr. Brown is also an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, previously working in the Child Protection, Adult Prosecution, and Appeals divisions. In addition to his duties as Chief Deputy, Mr. Brown is currently serving as President of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association. He is a frequent volunteer faculty member for state and national trainings on ethics, evidence, and trial skills. Additionally, Mr. Brown is an active member of the Veterans Defense Project Working Group which seeks to expand alternative sentencing for veterans

Kellie Charles: Ms. Charles is a senior attorney in the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office where she has worked since 1997. In her current position she supervises lawyers and support staff on the Treatment Court Team, the Appeals and Special Litigation Team, and the Felony Probation Revocation Team. Ms. Charles represents clients and serves on the steering committees in Hennepin County’s Veteran’s Court, Model Drug Court, Mental Health Court and DWI Court.  She is an adjunct professor of Advanced Trial Advocacy and Appellate Advocacy at Mitchell Hamline College of Law.  Her community involvement includes the Supreme Court Historical Society, the Family Shelter at Cretin-Derham Hall High School, and she has served as past president of AFSCME Local 2938.

Edward Sheu: Mr. Sheu is currently a partner at Best & Flanagan LLP where he was worked for 15 years. During his time at Best & Flanagan he has handled a diverse caseload which includes litigation, trials, and other dispute resolution in all practice areas, which includes state and federal courts. Previously, Mr. Sheu was a Law Clerk for the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Mr. Sheu’s community involvement includes being the Vice Chair of St. Paul’s District 10 Community Council and volunteering at Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, several bar associations, and other organizations.

 

Minnesota’s Second Judicial District consists of Ramsey County.
