Keynote Speaker
David
Cole
National Legal Director, ACLU
"Constitutional Law and Civil Society: What Drives
Constitutional Change?"
How does constitutional law change? David Cole,
ACLU’s National Legal Director, will discuss two of the most successful
constitutional reform efforts in the last half century – marriage equality and
the right to bear arms. Cole will argue that constitutional law’s
development is affected as much or more by civil society campaigns and
initiatives outside the federal courts as by path-breaking legal arguments
before the courts. He will also discuss the implications of this argument
for current efforts to defend liberty in today’s political
climate.
