ADR Tip of the Month - March 2014

ADR Tip of the Month: March 2014

All persons have common core values, such as safety, significance and belonging.  Conflict occurs not over core values, but over differing cultural methods used to achieve common values.  Methods are negotiable, values are not. When methods are negotiable, change is possible.  Conflict is best resolved by acknowledging and honoring common core values and negotiating the difference in methods.

This practice tip is drawn from Andre Koen's ADR CLE presentation, "Diversity as a Tool in ADR," at the ADR Section meeting on February 11, 2014.

Practice tip written by Louis Robards, MSBA ADR Council Member.
