The Elder Law Section has many ongoing programs and activities in which section members may participate.

E-Newsletter
The section publishes a monthly e-Newsletter which is distributed via email to all section members and which is posted online on the Elder Law Section’s Community page. Click here to view recent editions of the E-Newsletter.  The E-Newsletter provides information on section activities, upcoming educational opportunities and CLEs, news items about elder law issues, published and unpublished cases pertaining to elder law, links to other useful websites, and statutes, regulations, and bulletins of interest to elder law practitioners.

The E-Newsletter also accepts articles of interest from both members and non-members and provides a helpful Q & A section addressed by experienced elder law attorneys.  Anyone interested in submitting an article may contact Editor-in-Chief, Rachel Schromen.

Elder Law Institute
Each October, the Elder Law Section presents an annual two-day day institute in conjunction with Minnesota CLE.  The goal of the Institute is to provide educational and networking opportunities to attorneys and others interested in the practice of Elder Law.  Topics range from discussions of nursing home and Medical Assistance issues to legislative updates and policy analysis.  Institute attendees receive from nine to eleven Continuing Legal Education credits, depending upon the length of the Institute.  Click here for more information about the Institute.

Medical Assistance Forums (a.k.a Medical Assistance Committee)
The Elder Law Section sponsors meetings every two months for interested persons to discuss practice issues involving Medical Assistance (MA).  During these forums, members of the section meet in person and by phone to consider MA issues and challenges, to exchange information and possible solutions, and to discuss laws and policies related to MA.  The MA forums are held on the 3rd Tuesday of August, October, December, February, April, and June.

Vulnerable Adult Seminars
Members of the Vulnerable Adult Committee of the Elder Law Section are available to provide community seminars on a variety of topics related to abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of the elderly.  Seminar topics include:  Elder Abuse and Neglect; Facility Selection; Power of Attorney & Guardian/Conservatorships; and Vulnerable Adults Act & Financial Exploitation.  The committee also has resources available on topics such as: Maltreatment; Advocacy Groups; Civil and Criminal Remedies; Adult Protection Services; Care Facility License and Registration; and Scams. The committee also has published a brochure entitled “Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults: Abuse, Neglect, and Financial Exploitation in Minnesota,” which explains the Vulnerable Adults Act in laymen’s terms. Copies of the brochure are available to the public.  Anyone interested in scheduling a seminar or receiving a brochure may contact Marit Peterson.

Law Student Outreach and Service Project
Law students serving on the Elder Law Section Governing Council have begun a spring service project, open to all section members and to law students in the Twin Cities area. In the spring of each year, the Law Student Committee organizes and participates in a volunteer service project or outreach program. A new service project will be announced each spring in the section’s newsletter. Contact chair of the committee for more information: Jack Austin.
