Centering the Voices of Fosters - Policy Reform and Legislative Advocacy for Fosters by Fosters to Child Protection Systems

Event Description

Online registration is closed. To register, email Tram Nguyen at tnguyen@mnbars.org.

Foster Advocates is an organization aimed at addressing systemic challenges faced by young people currently in foster care and young adults formerly in foster care, known collectively as Fosters. Their organizational philosophy is that change to child welfare systems should be led by the people most impacted - Fosters.

In the 2021 legislative session, Foster Advocates successfully advocated for the passage of the Fostering Higher Education Act which provides funds for post-secondary education, housing, and transportation costs for students under the age of 27 who were in Minnesota’s foster care system at any time after turning age 13. Foster Advocates also pressed for the formation of the new Office of the Foster Youth Ombudsperson.

Join us to learn more about how we work in community, how attorneys can help clients benefit from the new laws, and discuss what’s on the horizon for foster care in MN.
