NFT, NBD? An introduction to block chain, non-fungible tokens in the entertainment industry

Have you heard the "latest, greatest" thing making a splash in entertainment news? NFT stands for non-fungible token, a type of cryptographic asset linked to some unique digital product. The underlying asset could be anything, digital art, a video, a sound recording. Some NFTs are trading for millions of dollars; an NFT issued by digital artist Beeple sold for $69M. NFT's use blockchain technology to record and validate ownership and transfers. Blockchain in general, but now specifically NFT's, offer potential new markets for the entertainment industry, but raise a host of novel intellectual property issues.

In this CLE our panelists will cover:
What is an NFT? How are they made, sold, and owned?
Background of blockchain and how it works
NFTs in entertainment news
Why are they worth money?
Legal issues including copyright, trademark, licensing, securities

Panelists:

Panelists: Teresa Walker, Waller Law; Tom Matzen, Matzen Consulting Group; Wulf Kaal, University of St. Thomas

Join us afterward for the Sports, Art and Entertainment Law Section Annual Meeting where we will elect the committee to lead the section for the next year. All council positions are open: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer. Nominations will be accepted from the floor.
