Legal Business as Usual | New Research on Lawyer Wellness

Event Description

Legal Business as Usual is our bi-weekly legal news webcast. We log in as early as 7:30 AM and the 'formal' interview begins at 8:00 AM. We typically wrap between 8:45 and 9:00 AM.

We'll take a look at two new lawyer-related wellness studies with their authors, Joan Bibelhausen of Lawyers for Concerned for Lawyers and Patrick Krill of Krill Strategies:

  • Stress and Resiliency in the US Judiciary, a comprehensive report published in the 2020 Journal of The Professional Lawyer on Dec. 23, 2020, surveyed more than 1,000 judges across the US, showing one-third or more report fatigue and low energy, sleep disturbance or disturbed attention and concentration.
  • Patrick Krill's study of 2,863 attorneys compiled during the pandemic found that depression symptoms, anxiety and stress were higher among female respondents, and a larger percentage of women than men were and engaging in risky or hazardous drinking.

Joan Bibelhausen has served as Executive Director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers since 2005.  She is an attorney and is nationally recognized for her work in the lawyer assistance and diversity and inclusion realms.  Joan has significant additional training in counseling, mental health and addiction, diversity, employment issues, and management. She has spent more than two decades working with lawyers, judges, and law students at a crossroads because of mental illness and addiction concerns and well-being, stress, and related issues.

Patrick Krill: Recognized globally as a leading authority on addiction, mental health, and well-being in the legal profession, Patrick R. Krill is an attorney, licensed and board-certified alcohol and drug counselor, author, researcher, and advocate.  He serves as a trusted advisor to large law firms and corporate legal departments throughout North America and Europe, educating them about and helping them navigate addiction, mental health, and well-being issues on a daily basis.
