Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) are a technology for gathering, managing, analyzing, integrating, mapping
and displaying spatial data. GIS technology affords the ability to layer data
from a variety of sources into a cohesive whole to enhance understanding of
patterns and relationships of real-world phenomena on the landscape. This presentation will provide
background and context on GIS technology, its benefits, uses and limitations when
applied to the legal realm and will outline several cases where this technology
has been deployed.
Presenter:
Geoffrey Maas AICP GISP, is the Senior Geospatial Business
Analyst for Ramsey County and is an Adjunct Professor at the Humphrey School of
Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota teaching courses in Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) and Data Visualization. He has 25 years of
professional experience in the fields of urban planning, GIS, cartography,
information design and project management. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in
Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master of Urban and
Regional Planning from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of
Minnesota.
