Public employees have a unique relationship with their
government. In one capacity, the government is prohibited by the
constitution from interfering with certain
civil rights. But in its role as employer, the government can restrict one’s liberties during the
workday and beyond, or at least impose consequences on an employee who
exercised those rights. That unique relationship is especially prevalent in the context of free speech. Join us
for a one-hour discussion, hosted by Assistant Anoka County Attorney Andrew
Jackola, exploring the rift between a public employee’s First
Amendment rights and their government-employer’s workplace speech restrictions.
