After years of
advocacy by community groups and leaders, on December 20, 2019,
the president signed the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act
(section 7611) (LRIFA). The eligibility criteria for adjustment extends broadly and applies to
Liberian nationals who have been continuously physically present in the U.S.
since November 20, 2014 and are otherwise admissible. Spouses,
children and unmarried sons and daughters are also eligible to adjust
status. The window to apply is short—one year from the LRIFA’s
enactment.
Nationwide more
than 4,000 Liberian nationals and their immediate family members may be eligible
to adjust their status to lawful permanent residency. Minnesota’s Liberian
community, the largest in the U.S. numbering about 30,000, includes many people
who will be seeking legal help to apply for adjustment of status.
The CLE will
cover the background of LRIFA, eligibility requirements, what will be needed to
apply, how to screen for eligibility, how to refer for legal help, and how to
volunteer through the Volunteer Lawyers Network or other community initiatives.
Participants will be asked to provide pro bono legal services through the
Volunteer Lawyers Network LRIFA Pro Se Legal Clinic.
