This CLE
will provide an overview of immigration detention generally, and discuss the
disturbing realities surrounding immigration detention in Minnesota. Presenters
will discuss the legal basis for ICE detention, the general framework of the
immigration detention system in Minnesota, issues and trends specific to
asylum-seekers and trafficking victims in Minnesota, emergency preparation and
pro se help with collateral matters for immigrants at risk of detention, the
realities and trauma experienced by immigrants in detention, and issues that
immigrants face post-detention. Presenters will also provide information about
how attorneys, paralegals, and others can volunteer to help immigrants and
refugees in Minnesota who are facing detention or have other immigration-related
needs.

Anne Applebaum | Immigrant Law Center of
Minnesota, Pro Bono Director
Anne Applebaum is the Pro Bono
Director at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. She has been in that role for
eight years, overseeing ILCM’s volunteer attorney programming and working with
clients on a range of immigration law matters.
Colleen Beebe Purisaca | Volunteer Lawyers Network,
Manager/Attorney Immigrant Legal Services Program
Colleen Beebe Purisaca is the Manager/Attorney,
Immigrant Legal Services Program at the Volunteer Lawyers Network. She has
worked on immigration matters for over 34 years as a volunteer, accredited
representative and lawyer through several legal aid and human rights
organizations.
Sarah Brenes | Advocates for Human Rights, Director,
Refugee and Immigrant Program
Sara Brenes is the Director of the Refugee and
Immigrant Program, at the Advocates for Human Rights. Sara has worked in the
area of immigration law and human rights for over 10 years. In her role at
Advocates, she represents refugees seeking asylum, detainees, and people with
various immigration issues. She leads efforts to recruit, train, and support
volunteers attorneys who represented represent refugees and immigrants.
Alison Olson Cox | MMLA, Managing Attorney
Alison
Olson Cox is the Managing Attorney for the Immigration Law Project at
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. She has been with MMLA for over eleven years and has
handled a wide variety of immigration matters including complex naturalization
cases, court representation, and immigration benefits for survivors of domestic
violence.
Siv Dobrovolny | Standpoint, Youth Labor
Trafficking Attorney
Siv Dobrovolny is currently the Youth Labor
Trafficking Project Attorney at Standpoint. She started representing trafficking
clients in 2006 and in her current role she provides both direct representation
and manages a pool of pro bono attorneys.
Steve Kraemer | Conversations with Friends, Director
Steve Kraemer was a member of the
first visit team of Conversations with Friends (CWF) in March 2011 and became
Director in 2016. In addition to visits at the Freeborn and Carver County jails,
other CWF programs include pen pals, attendance at immigration hearings and safe
release from ICE.
Michelle Rivero | City of Minneapolis Office of Immigrant
and Refugee Affairs, Director
Michelle Rivero is the Director of the
Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) for the City of Minneapolis, an
office within the Department of Neighborhood and Community Relations which was
established in 2018 with the mission of assisting the City of Minneapolis to
develop strategies and programs to welcome, support, inform, integrate and
defend our immigrant and refugee communities. More information about OIRA can be
