Please join us for a presentation by Brian P. Reid, Jason D. Roth, and Jennie Buchanan from the
Calgary, Alberta Canada offices of Bennett Jones LLP regarding the unique
aspects of construction law in Canada. Topics to be discussed will
include: jurisdictional issues between the federal and provincial governments,
procurement pit falls, builders’ liens, key common law principles and project
security.

*The 2nd Annual Construction Law Section Writing Contest winners will be
awarded with a brief ceremony. The first place winner with a $1000 award is
Isak Hawkinson from the University of Minnesota Law School. The second place
winner with a $500 award is Jason Dzurik of Mitchell Hamline Law
School.

Bennett Jones LLP (Calgary Office)
Brian Reid is a Partner in the Calgary offices of Bennett Jones LLP where he
has a diverse commercial litigation practice with a strong emphasis on
construction and energy related disputes. Brian assists international and
domestic owners, contractors and engineers with the review and drafting of
construction and joint venture contracts and tender documents. He also has
extensive experience with builder's lien disputes. Brian has also worked as
in-house legal counsel for a TSX-Listed oil and gas drilling company and a large
manufacturing company in the State of Qatar. He is also an Executive Committee
Member for the National Construction and Infrastructure Law Section of the
Canadian Bar Association.

Bennett Jones LLP (Calgary Office)
Jason Roth is a Partner in the Calgary offices of Bennett Jones LLP and is
the head of the firm's construction law practice group. Jason specializes in
infrastructure development projects and represents owners/developers and
contractors in relation to domestic and international infrastructure, LNG,
power, electrical transmission, pipeline, natural gas processing and other
projects. Jason provides strategic advice, structuring, and drafting and
negotiation of design/build, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC),
engineering and procurement (E&P), engineering, procurement and construction
management (EPCM) and owner-managed contracts related to such projects. He also
assists clients with procurement and supply chain matters as well as contract
administration issues such as change order management and warranty issues.
From 2005 to 2006, Jason was in-house project counsel for the Qatar Liquefied
Gas Company Limited (II) Project in Doha, Qatar. He is also a member of the
Canadian Bar Association construction practice section and a member of the
British Columbia Construction Roundtable.

Jennie Buchanan is an Associate in the Calgary offices of Bennett Jones LLP
where she has diverse commercial litigation practice, with a focus on domestic
and international commercial arbitration and employment. Jennie assists clients
involved in complex construction disputes, both domestically and
internationally, with a particular emphasis on energy projects. With respect to
her employment practice, Jennie advises clients with respect to all employment
matters, regularly representing employers in wrongful dismissal disputes to
achieve expeditious and cost-effective resolutions. Prior to joining Bennett
Jones, Jennie was litigation counsel for the Enforcement Branch of the Ontario
Securities Commission, where she worked on complex securities fraud matters.
