The MSBA is considering recommending changes to its rules governing the
practice of law in Minnesota by attorneys licensed in other states. Our
panelists will review ethical issues relating to multijurisdictional
practice, discuss the arguments for and against changing the rules, recent case
law, and the practical impact of the proposed rule change on Minnesota
lawyers.
Lunch will be provided.
Presenters:
Susan Humiston | Susan Humiston is the
director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility and Client
Security Board. She has more than 20 years of litigation experience, as well as
a strong ethics and compliance background. Prior to her appointment, Susan
was Vice-President and Assistant General Counsel for Alliant Techsystems Inc.
and its public company spin-off Vista Outdoor Inc., and was a litigation partner
at Leonard, Street and Deinard, now Stinson Leonard Street. She clerked for U.S.
District Court Judge David S. Doty, is an honors graduate of the University of
Iowa College of Law, and received her B.A. with honors from the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln.
Eric Cooperstein | Eric is a former Senior Assistant
Director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility, where he worked
from 1995 to 2001, and a former member of the 4th District Ethics Committee, on
which he served from 2003 through April 2007. He started his private law
practice devoted to legal ethics in the fall of 2006. Eric currently serves on
the boards of Minnesota Continuing Legal Education and Minnesota Lawyers Mutual
Insurance. He is a recent past president of the Hennepin County Bar Association
and also chaired MSBA’s Rules of Professional Conduct Committee from July 2009
through June 2012. Eric is a member of the Association of Professional
Responsibility Lawyers (APRL) and served on the 2007-08 Minnesota Supreme
Court’s Advisory Committee regarding the Attorney Discipline System.
