The 2016 Elections - Impact on Public Lawyers, Ethics, Immigration and Adjusting to Change

Event Description

Deadline to Register: May 3, 2017

The 2016 elections brought about significant change at all levels of government, in particular at the federal level.  Federal policy initiatives are underway that could impact state and local government.  The practice of public lawyers, and those with local-government-related practice, may be affected.  And, as the old adage goes, “change is hard.”  How did we get here?  In what ways is the practice of public law likely to change?  What ethical issues are raised?  How has the election impacted immigrants to the U.S., and what are the implications for public lawyers?  How can we best serve our clients’ interests, while we adapt to change?  How can we, as individuals and attorneys, best renew ourselves and maintain “calm in the face of the storm”?  We have assembled an exceptional panel of speakers to address the impact of the 2016 elections on public lawyers, and plan a robust discussion with our panelists about the issues that may impact our work.

Children's Book Drive

As public lawyers, many of us have limited opportunities for pro bono legal work, but we do have opportunities to enrich the communities we serve. In that spirit, the Public Law Section is conducting a Children's Book Drive at its annual meeting. The books will be donated to St. Joseph's Home for Children, the Hennepin County Domestic Abuse Service Center and Harriet Tubman in Maplewood. New and slightly used books are greatly appreciated, especially board books for toddlers. Please contribute what you can!

If you prefer to provide a financial contribution, you may do so by writing a check payable to any of the following (according to your preference):  MSBA, St. Joseph's Shelter for Children, or Harriet Tubman.  Checks will be accepted at the annual meeting.

After the CLE, the Public Law Section will hold their Annual Meeting & awards luncheon. All members are welcome.
