Nonprofits and Political Activity in These Political Times

Event Description

Deadline to Register: April 20, 2017

Due to the current social and political climate, many nonprofit boards are considering how they can best achieve their missions and support the communities they serve.   This presentation will provide an overview and specific examples on the types of issues most nonprofits need to consider in order to manage the risks that exist with engaging in advocacy activities, particularly during these times when organizations may be expanding their advocacy and lobbying work.

This is a presentation is part of the Business Law Section’s Nonprofit Corporations Committee brown bag lunch series.  We will meet at the MSBA offices at noon.  Please bring your own lunch.  Water and soft drinks will be provided.

Registration begins at 11:45 a.m.  The program begins at Noon.

Presenters:

Rebecca Lucero
Public Policy Director, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits
Rebecca is responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s advocacy agenda locally and nationally, educate Minnesota nonprofits on key policy issues, lobby on behalf of Minnesota’s nonprofit sector, and train nonprofit professionals on a wide array of advocacy issues and skills.  Prior to joining MCN, Rebecca served as policy and advocacy manager for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, where she helped pass $100 million bonding in the Homes for All campaign. Rebecca has also worked as senior community representative in the Minnesota office of Representative Keith Ellison, an unemployment law judge with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, and an attorney in private practice with a small firm and with Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis. She has a law degree from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in Political Science from Grinnell College (Iowa).

Emily Robertson

Emily practices law through Robertson Law Office, LLC, which works primarily with small to medium-size nonprofits and tax exempt organizations on issues surrounding tax and regulatory compliance, governance, and other areas more unique to the nonprofit sector.  Emily has spent the past 15 years working in and around nonprofit organizations, and this experience has enabled the development of a keen understanding of both the culture within nonprofit organizations, and the particular demands that nonprofits face on a daily basis.  Emily is currently a board member of both the Charities Review Council and the Hennepin County Bar Association, adjunct faculty teaching Nonprofit Law for Hamline University’s Masters in Nonprofit Management program, and a frequent speaker on governance, tax and other issues related to nonprofit organizations.
