Working with Non-citizens on Social Security Claims

Laura Melnick is an attorney with Southern Minnesota Legal Regional Legal Services who handles SSI appeals for refugees as part of her practice. Representing non-citizens is a very specialized area in a social security practice with many moving parts depending on the claimant’s immigration status. Ms. Melnick will discuss Non-Citizen eligibility for SSI in general as well as Public Law 110-328 - “The SSI Extension for Elderly and Disabled Refugees Act and POMS SI 00502.017 and POMS RS 00204.010 - “Lawful Presence Payment Provisions”. Ms. Melnick is currently the lead benefits attorney, supervising the benefits unit at the central office in Saint Paul.

This presentation is essential for any practitioner who works with the immigrant community, is looking to expand his/her practice or wants to keep up with all nuances of social security regulations.
