About Hennepin County District Court

4th Judicial District Court in the Minnesota Judicial Branch.  We hear cases that occur in Hennepin County.

Training Provided to Summer Associates

The clerk will work as part of a chambers team for an individual judge.  The judge could be assigned to any one of a number of areas: civil, criminal, juvenile, family, probate/mental health, or our treatment courts.  Being part of a chambers is a special responsibility.  You will work closely with the judge and the judge’s existing staff.  You will also have the opportunity to observe other proceedings in the courthouse. In addition to legal research and writing opportunities, the clerk will be able to participate in a summer educational program introducing all summer clerks and interns to the many facets of the justice system.  This comprehensive program is designed to familiarize our summer staff to all aspects of the judicial branch, specifically in the Fourth District, and many of our justice partners.

Pro Bono/Commitment Involvement

There is no direct pro bono opportunity built into the summer experience.  However, many of our judicial officers and clerks participate in community outreach and education, and you may participate in those efforts.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Fourth Judicial District Court, and the MN Judicial Branch as a whole, is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our daily work.  We have invested resources to education our staff and put ideas into practice.  Part of the summer intern program will provide a DEI overview, support, engagement, and opportunities to make change.   You will meet other BIPOC employees who can share and mentor you during the internship.

Summer Associate/Clerkship Description

Become a member of a judge’s chambers.  You will be able to observe a wide range of courtroom hearings and contribute the review and drafting of legal research memoranda, as well as draft orders.  You will also come to understand the many behind-the-scenes efforts of clerks and judicial officers that help make our justice system run smoothly.  Because COVID has had a dramatic impact on the delivery of justice across the country, you will learn how a high-volume urban court is using technology to ensure and increase participation.

Successful Candidate Qualities

Be an active member of chambers staff.  Observe and learn quickly.  Maintain the confidential nature of chamber’s discussions.  Legal research and writing could be an important part of your work, so strong skills in those areas (and a desire to improve) is expected.  Be someone who looks for opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute.  Being service-oriented toward our justice partners is also important.  Share ideas on how the court can grow to better serve our diverse public in Hennepin County.

Summer Clerkship Salary and Benefits

$21.65 to $22.78 per hour.  Internship must be less than 90 days.  Benefit package is not included for this internship.
