Landon Ascheman Becomes the 104th President of the HCBA

Minneapolis— Landon Ascheman becomes the 104th president of the Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA) on July 1. Ascheman is a solo practitioner at Ascheman Law, a Special Assistant Public Defender for Hennepin County, and an adjunct professor for Mitchell Hamline School of Law.

Ascheman graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in 2009, and he earned his undergraduate degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Prior to attending law school, he was an intelligence specialist for the U.S. Navy and the Minnesota Army National Guard, and he is a veteran of the War in Afghanistan. Before opening his own firm in 2009, he was a law clerk at the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

In addition to his leadership with the HCBA, Ascheman is the president of the Mitchell Hamline Alumni Association. He serves on numerous local and state boards including the Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board. He is a volunteer attorney for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, and the Mitchell Hamline Self-Help Clinic, and is a volunteer mediator with the Conflict Resolution Center serving the Hennepin County Civil Harassment Courts. He is focused on improving the practice of law and addressing the access to justice gap here in Minnesota. He has also been certified North Star Lawyer (providing 50 or more hours of pro bono service) every year since the program’s inception in 2012. Ascheman also received an HCBA Excellence Award for Mentoring in the Profession in 2018.

In his free time, Ascheman is an avid swimmer and routinely competes in outdoor swimming competitions. He is the first Minnesotan to complete an Ice Mile, where participants swim a mile in water temperatures of 41 degrees or less.

Serving with Ascheman in the HCBA leadership for the coming year is the executive committee, including newly elected HCBA Secretary Jessica Klander (Bassford Remele), who begins the five-year leadership track (to serve as president for 2025-26). Nicholas M. Ryan (The Law Office of Eric T. Cooperstein) serves a one-year term, representing the New Lawyers Section.
