Esteban A. Rivera Becomes 2020-2021 President of the HCBA

Minneapolis— Esteban A. Rivera becomes the 102nd president of the Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA) on July 1. Rivera is the managing partner of Rivera Law Firm, where he practices mainly in immigration law and international law with emphasis in Latin America. He handles employment, investment, and family-based immigration cases before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and removal defense in front of Immigration Court. He is the first HCBA president to have also served as president of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association (MHBA).

In addition to his immigration practice, Rivera is active in the local legal community. He served as president of the MHBA in 2015-16, and he has served on the HCBA board of directors since 2011. Rivera is also a coach of the Mitchell Hamline School of Law team at the Hispanic National Bar Association Uvaldo Herrera Moot Court Competition, where his team recently took first place at the 2020 competition. He is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, Rivera received his law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. Mr. Rivera worked for over five years as an associate and law clerk for two well-known law firms, where he practiced intellectual property and corporate law, representing mainly Forbes Global 2000 companies.

Rivera received his J.D. from Hamline University School of Law in 2010. He served as an associate and an associate editor of the Hamline Law Review and was a member of the Intellectual Property Giles Rich Moot Court Competition Team. 

Serving with Rivera in the HCBA leadership for the coming year is the executive committee, including newly elected HCBA Secretary Nicole Kettwick (Brandt Criminal Defense), who begins the five-year leadership track (to serve as president for 2023-24). Jessica Timmington Lindstrom (Winthrop & Weinstine) serves a one-year term, representing the New Lawyers Section.
