The Energy Transition - Overcoming the Challenges of Today for Better Outcomes Tomorrow

Registration will begin at 8:30 am. The program will begin at 9:00 am.  Box lunches will be provided at 12:30 pm to those that attend in person. Special meal requests must be received no later than April 11th.

Please join the Public Utilities Law Section and Mitchell Hamline School of  Law  for a timely discussion with energy experts on the current challenges of our energy transition and how we can plan for better and more equitable future outcomes.

We are excited to welcome our Keynote Speaker, Aubrey Johnson, Vice President, System Planning & Competitive Transmission, MISO.  Mr. Johnson oversees all aspects of transmission planning, resource planning and modeling to meet MISO's future system needs.  He is responsible for the planning process that yields the annual MISO Transmission Expansion Plan including reliability, economic and interregional planning, transmission cost allocation, resource adequacy, resource utilization, modeling, and the competitive transmission developer selection and monitoring process.

This event will be in-person with a hybrid option for those attending remotely. We encourage everyone to attend in person to network with colleagues and law students.

Following our Keynote Speaker, we will have three moderated panel discussions addressing all facets of the current energy transition, including federal, state and local level challenges and initiatives.

Panel I:  Shaping the Energy Future of our Nation: Recent Federal Legislation and Grid Modernization Efforts that are Making a Difference
This panel will discuss recent federal legislation impacting the energy transition in the United States.  The panelists will focus on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the Investment Infrastructure and Jobs Act (IIJA), energy justice measures and other federal initiatives.  The panel will also address the impact that these new federal laws will have on modernizing the electric grid and transitioning to increased electrification and cleaner forms of energy.

Panel II:  Minnesota's Innovative Approaches to Regulation that are Paving the Path Forward for the State's Transition to Cleaner Energy
This panel will discuss Minnesota's recent legislation and efforts to address a clean energy transition within our state.  Discussion will focus on several initiatives including Minnesota's recent adoption of a carbon-free electricity standard that will set the stage to lower greenhouse gas emissions, address climate change and create new clean energy jobs.  The panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges for customers as new legislation is implemented and the energy transition moves forward.

Panel III: Customers Matter: Ensuring an Equitable Energy Transition and that the Customer Voice is Heard
This panel will look at how the customer perspective is helping to inform decision makers and other stakeholder processes as we advance through this time of unprecedented change in our energy systems. Energy equity dictates that the clean energy transition must also incorporate concepts of fairness and justice for marginalized communities.  This panel will explore the importance of equity in the clean energy transition and discuss potential avenues for integrating equity concepts into regulation, legislation, and stakeholder processes.
