This course is geared toward the non-criminal defense practitioner or new lawyer whom is considering entering the criminal defense arena, or wants to be competent enough to help family and friends. The course provides a general overview of the criminal case process and procedures, as well as some important, necessary details that will educate the non-criminal defense and/or new lawyer with satisfactory knowledge to speak intelligently and competently with a prospective client. Key topics to be discussed:

  • The pivotal points of a DWI stop and arrest
  • Alcohol testing procedures
  • Bail issues and process
  • The various categories of criminal DWI charges
  • The differences in the procedure for each category of criminal charges
  • The Plea Agreement process
  • Common motions
  • Sentencing and punishment

Presenters:

Kelly Keegan is a partner at Brandt Criminal Defense and has been with the firm since its inception in 2005. In that time she has been lead defense counsel on hundreds of cases of all types and levels, ranging from serious felonies to minor traffic offenses. Additionally, Kelly handles post-conviction matters such as expungement, probation violations, Department of Human Services background study disqualifications, reinstatement of the right to possess firearms, and sentence modification motions.

Michael Trittipo, Attorney Editor, MSBA. Michael is an attorney editor with the MSBA. He earned his J.D. cum laude in 1981, and practiced law for several years. He currently maintains the MSBA's mndocs templates using the HotDocs platform.
