As
countries around the world work to aid the West African countries hardest hit by
the Ebola outbreak, state and local governments, along with health care
providers, face their own set of unique challenges. Questions like how to prepare for such a
deadly disease, clouded by misinformation and almost certain to create panic
among the population, are extremely daunting. Meanwhile, the hospitals, physicians and
nurses likely to be at the front line in the event a patient contracts Ebola
need to know not only what to do to detect and treat the disease, but how to
stop it from spreading to other people—including themselves. The Minnesota Health Department has
taken the lead in our state in raising awareness about this disease, its
transmission and helping to coordinate a state-wide strategy to tackle Ebola if
it ever shows up here. Meanwhile,
four hospitals, including University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, have
been selected to be prepared to detect, isolate and treat Ebola cases in
Minnesota. Please join the Health
Law Section for a discussion of this fascinating public health and emergency
management event from some of the key players who have helped Minnesota get
prepared.
