“If
you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.’ (UNLESS you’re
losing your children, or your home, or your health care, or…)” -National Coalition for a Civil Right to
Counsel.
The
concept of a civil right to counsel for cases involving basic needs is gaining
traction nationally. Several states have expanded the right to counsel in
important civil proceedings such as housing, domestic abuse, and custody. Building on the 2011 MSBA Civil Gideon
Task Force Report, the CLE will educate participants about the right to counsel
in civil proceedings involving essential basic needs, such as food and shelter,
and will also discuss the legal foundation for the concept, recent national
developments, and opportunities to make a difference in Minnesota. The CLE will focus on civil and
administrative law, as many basic needs, such as custody, employment,
unemployment insurance, and public assistance benefits are disputed in these
settings.
This
is a brown-bag seminar. We will
provide the coffee; you can bring your breakfast.
