Event Description
Deadline to Register: April 19, 2017
Government lawyers have special
duties and relationships with members of the public. In
addition, MSBA Public Law Section’s Diversity Plan makes education on diversity
issues a high priority for members. While persons who are transgender have become far more
visible today, still, of the letters in the “LGBTQ alphabet” (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
queer), the “Ts” (transgender persons) are far less discussed or understood. Transgender
persons often face unique challenges relative to personal relationships, public interactions, and many other
things that non-transgender persons (the technical phrase is “cisgender”)
take for granted. In this session you will learn what it means
to be
a “trans” person; what you as a public lawyer, and
fellow
human,
can do to make trans people feel welcomed
and accepted. You will also learn the “basics” regarding pronouns, “passing,” and the bathroom wars. In addition, the current status of transgender individual
legal rights in Minnesota and other states will be discussed with a focus on the impact the law plays in a transgender person’s daily life.
Presenter:
Ellie Krug
National speaker, diversity
consultant and author Ellen “Ellie” Krug will provide her “Transgender
101” course/discussion, and will share what it means to be transgender.
Elllie offers tips and advice on how to be inclusive toward anyone who
identifies as trans. Her talk will also include some brief sharing of Ellie’s
personal story.
