Eduardo Saverin and Section 877A Expatriation Tax

Event Description

Eduardo Saverin and the Section 877A Expatriation Tax. Plus a brief overview of Canadian income taxes and the Canada-US Tax Treaty.

US citizens and long-term residents are leaving the US in record numbers. Each calendar quarter the IRS lists those individuals who have renounced their US citizenship or turned in their Green Card. This list contains a few names you may recognize, including Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. His renunciation of US Citizenship was well planned and executed with the Section 877A Expatriation Tax in mind. This presentation will give an overview of Section 877A and how Mr. Saverin mitigated his US income tax exposure. It will also discuss how Section 877A can trap the unwary, especially Canadian nationals who, after an extended residence in the US to work, desire to move back home to Canada.
