If you had time to sing one song

by Joe Kaczrowski | Nov 17, 2015

Often referred to as an "elevator speech," do you have a short explanation of what you do, the value of your services, and what you can do for potential clients? Getting its name from the short time you have in an elevator to potentially pitch yourself to someone, it is generally limited to 20-30 seconds, or less. There may be instances where a simple "I'm a lawyer" or "I'm a commercial litigator" may be sufficient and appropriate, but your pitch can be refined to be more memorable and effective with potential clients. Given a half hour, or a complete album, you could likely demonstrate your talents and show value, but what if you only had 30 seconds, or one song, what would you say?

There are many articles and guides from marketing experts like Terrie Wheeler available to help lawyers refine their short introductory pitches. One common theme is to focus not on what you do and what you offer, but rather speak to how you can help the potential client solve a specific problem. As discussed in an earlier post, people don't go to Home Depot to buy a shovel, they go because they need a hole dug.

Once you have your elevator speech, can you get more mileage out of it? The MSBA is trying a new pilot program, Video Day, on December 16 (from 10am to 2pm) where members will be able to record their pitch for use on a firm website, social media, and elsewhere. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a good marketing video is worth 900,000 1.

MSBA Video Day is a new program designed to offer members the opportunity to record their 20 - 30 second elevator speech for use on a firm website, social media, email campaigns, etc. For just $150 2, members get full rights to the final video (the MSBA merely facilitates the process and retains no rights in the finished product). Don't have a polished pitch yet? Terrie Wheeler will be available the day of to help you create, update, and refine your pitch. For more information, or to register for one of the 15-minute appointments, email feedback@mnbar.org.
