Sales Tax on Legal Services
The Section of Real Property Law has submitted a letter to the majority and minority leadership in the House and Senate, to the members of the Tax Committees in both chambers and to the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and House Civil Justice Committee, expressing the Section's opposition to a sales tax (or any other tax) on legal services. All MSBA members have been asked to participate in the effort to defeat this initiative. The effort to prevent this tax from ever becoming law will be helped if Section members write to their senator and representative in the legislature, emphasizing why this tax will not benefit Minnesota citizens or the state's economic recovery. Time is of the essence in communicating this message to our elected representatives as this year's legislative session winds down. Personal contact and phone calls are generally more effective than letters, letters are more effective than e-mails and e-mails are more effective than doing nothing. The actions which members of the MSBA take can make a difference in the outcome of this legislative initiative.
