"The Importance of the Free Trade Agreements in International Law"
Silvia Ontaneda, the current Consul General of Ecuador to Minnesota, will take a look at the incentives and motives of countries for signing Free Trade Agreements, discuss the importance of the Free Trade Agreements and identify key aspects when applying the law of conflicts regarding products that are protected under the scope of FTAs. At the end of the presentation, there will be a Q&A session during which Ms. Ontaneda will answer questions regarding the FTAs in general and APTDEA specifically.
Silvia Ontaneda, Consul General of Ecuador to Minnesota
Silvia Ontaneda is an International Law Attorney in her home country of Ecuador. In 2009 she was appointed by Ecuadorian President, Rafael Correa to establish the first Diplomatic Representation of Ecuador to Minnesota, the Consulate General of Ecuador. Prior to this position, Ms. Ontaneda worked as an International Public Law Attorney in Ecuador. In 2005 Ms. Ontaneda obtained a Master in International Law (LLM) at the University of Minnesota Law School and continued to pursue her JD, while working as the Director of Latino Advocacy at Centro Legal in the Twin Cities. She is the founder of the Latina Leadership Institute as well as the Centro del Migrante and the Centro Vida y Salud. She is also the creator of the South American Trade Forum of Minnesota. She is currently working in promoting the extension of the APTDEA, a bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Ecuador and the United States.
