The MSBA's Family Section Presents
"Lawyer Safety Issues for Family Lawyers"
Lawyer safety is often taken for granted, however, this much-neglected issue can quickly become relevant. Often the flippant response on this issue is to get a conceal and carry permit, however, this seminar will teach you that this is not the most effective answer. Practical safety measures every attorney and staff member should consider and implement will be discussed along with methods for evaluating safety issues in your own practice , including defining safety and addressing the physical environment and human environment.
We will examine lawyer safety issues in light of the known lethality risk factors identified for evaluating domestic violence cases, including the Blueprint for Safety Practitioner’s Guide to Assessing Risk and Danger in Domestic Violence. We will also discuss ethical issues raised in Ms. Melcher’s experience regarding a duty to warn another attorney that his/her client may pose a danger and/or has threatened to harm or kill the other attorney.
