The MSBA's Environment, Natural Resources & Energy Law Section Presents
"Frac Sand Mining: Environmental and Regulatory Developments" & Law Student Reception
Advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking technologies have created a boom in the recovery of natural gas and oil from previously untapped geologic deposits such as shale. While Minnesota does not possess these geologic deposits, it does possess abundant deposits of industrial sand, sometimes called frac sands. These sands are critical components for the hydraulic fracking process. The explosive growth in Minnesota’s sand mining industry has stirred a debate about how to best to regulate frac sand mining to minimize its environmental, health, and safety risks.
